Happy Sunday and Happy New Year 2025!
I hope you all had an amazing New Year! 🥳
Since I joined Bluesky I’ve been able to find great people, and Lai is one of them. I love doing these interviews because it gives me (and hopefully to you too) a much broad perspective onto why people build what they build. I hope to continue this journey, and make sure to let me know if you are enjoying these series of interviews with #indiehackers. Respond to this email and let me know if you enjoy them.
Now, let’s see what Lai has to say!

Community-Driven Development: The bskyInfo Journey
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business or product?
I am a software engineer, and I only registered my BlueSky account in mid-November. I was amazed by the active community and the flood of resources and tools that started appearing. Inspired by bigraredeal, I created bskyInfo.com as my side project. The goal of this site is to provide BlueSky users with a convenient and quick place to find various tools and resources.
What was your main inspiration for getting into it?
My main inspiration came from the excitement I saw within the BlueSky community and the need for a central hub where users could easily discover useful tools. Observing how quickly tools were being developed and shared made me realize there was an opportunity to create a platform that could gather and present them efficiently.
How do you define success in your niche?
Success for me is when people think of bskyInfo first whenever they're looking for BlueSky-related tools. It’s about being the go-to resource for users.
If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?
If I had to start from scratch, I would choose a simple yet effective web monitoring tool and set it up to track user traffic from day one. Understanding how visitors interact with the site early on would allow me to make better decisions and improve the user experience faster.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar product or niche?
My advice would be to prioritize serving both tool developers and those searching for tools. Providing value to both sides will create a strong foundation for your product's growth.
What was the most challenging aspect of Building in Public or Indie Hacking?
The most challenging aspect has been marketing—getting the word out and ensuring that more people know about your product. It can be hard to stand out, especially when you're just starting.
What problem are you solving that most people don't see or understand?
Before the site launched, I took the initiative to collect various BlueSky tools. I researched, wrote descriptions, downloaded logos, and created posters. This proactive approach ensured that bskyInfo now has one of the most complete collections of BlueSky tools.
Share a moment when you almost gave up, and what kept you going?
There was a moment when I saw other developers' web traffic and Google search rankings skyrocketing, while my own traffic remained stagnant. It was disheartening, but what kept me going was my belief in the value I was providing and the connections I was making within the community.
How has building this product changed you as a person or a professional?
Building bskyInfo has allowed me to connect with more talented developers within the BlueSky platform. It has helped me grow as a professional by providing a deeper understanding of how to build and market a product in a niche community.
